When Citymapper tells you to ride 50 stops on one bus to get to your destination, you know you’re going to be on that bus for a while. Personally I love a long bus journey and would often choose that over a faster route via tube or train. It allows you to sit back, relax and enjoy the view. In the fast world in which many of us live, especially if you live in a city, and where we expect everything now – same day deliveries, a whole TV series to watch at once, 24 hour news – I think it’s good to slow things down sometimes. As the Guinness saying goes, good things come to those who wait.
Today I went on an adventure in Croydon and that meant I could get the 468 bus the whole way there, door to door. Yes I could’ve saved about 20 minutes if I were to travel via other means, but I love a bus ride up and down the hills of south east London. No need to worry about missing interchanges or navigating your way around stations. It’s even better if you get the best seat at the front upstairs.
I thought I’d get the train back, but the bus was far more convenient from the pub we ended up in, and I don’t think my body would’ve coped with more walking than was absolutely necessary.
A lot of people may think spending over an hour travelling each way to a destination in the city you live in is a lot, but living in London it’s something I’m used to. Of course there are times when you don’t have time to take the slow route, but wherever possible I like making the time to do so. After a busy week, those two hours of me time, alone on a bus did me the world of good. Now I’ve just gotta make time to go through all the photos I took today.
